crw_3313.jpg

Average Growth: 6 inches in body length

Average Lifespan: 5 - 7 years

Type: Terrestrial

Origin: Africa

Temperature: 25 - 32°C

Behaviour: Typically docile if tamed from young. Solitary creatures that would prefer to live alone. Not very active but usually more active at night. Will tolerate handling to a certain extent.

Housing: At least a 2 x 1.5 feet space with straight walls to discourage climbing. Towels, newspaper and Aspen wood shavings can be used as bedding. Provide a heavy based food and water dish to avoid tipping over. A hide is optional. Keep in warm and dark area.

Diet: Premium, super premium or holistic cat and dog biscuits as staple food. A variety of insects such as crickets, beetles, mealworms and earthworms should be offered. Feed daily with 1-2 tablespoons of biscuits and 5 - 8 insects. Fresh water should be available at all times. Avoid feeding any dairy products.

Toys: Toilet paper roll, bottles, small balls for cats.

Additional note: The hedgehog should be bathed every fortnight with mild baby liquid soap and a toothbrush to avoid severe mite infection and skin problems. Change newspaper and towel bedding every 2-3 days. Replace wood shavings once a week.
